How to Check Your Truck's Transmission Fluid

Hey there, truck owners! Luke here from Truck Transmission Specialists. Today, we're going over a simple, but critical task: checking your transmission fluid.

Just like your engine needs oil, your transmission needs fluid to operate smoothly. Keeping the fluid at the proper level and in good condition can prevent costly repairs down the road. Don't worry, it's a straightforward process, even if you're new under the hood.

What You'll Need

  • Clean Rags

  • Gloves (optional, but recommended)

  • Transmission Fluid (if you need to top it off - check your owner's manual for the correct type)

Let's Get Started!

  1. Park on a Level Surface: This ensures an accurate reading of the fluid level.

  2. Safety First: Engage the parking brake and make sure your truck is in Park (or Neutral for manual transmissions). Let the engine run for a few minutes to warm up the transmission fluid.

  3. Locate the Dipstick: The transmission dipstick is usually located towards the rear of the engine bay. It may have a red or orange handle and will be clearly labeled. If in doubt, consult your owner's manual.

  4. Check the Fluid: With the engine still running, carefully remove the dipstick. Wipe it clean with a rag, then reinsert it fully. Remove it again and take note of the fluid level. It should fall between the Add and Full marks. The color of the fluid is also important. New transmission fluid is typically bright red. If it's brown or black, or has a burnt smell, it's a sign that it needs to be changed.

  5. Top Off if Needed: If the fluid level is low, add the recommended transmission fluid (as specified in your owner's manual) through the dipstick tube. Pour slowly and check the level frequently to avoid overfilling. Overfilling can cause problems just like underfilling.
